Back in 2002. LED’s were proving to be the right way to address the strict technical standards set by road safety regulators regarding car headlights. They were far more energy efficient than traditional head lamps, their size offered greater versatility and they shone extremely brightly.
From an engineering perspective it was no-brainer. From a design perspective however, it set a totally new set of challenges that Audi Design set out to explore. The key problem was that traditional head lamps have always played an important role in framing the car’s face by resembling a pair of eyes.
The introduction of Led headlights would greatly alter the look of the car. As a contract industrial designer at Audi Design I was asked to explore ways in which LED”s could be gradually integrated into car design without compromising the Audi DNA. This was done over a period of time during which I was responsible for developing headlights for a number of showcars including the Pikes Peak and Le Man.
